What is Orthopedic Physiotherapy?

Orthopedic physiotherapy is the branch of physiotherapy that helps people reduce their pain or recover from an injury that is occurring to the bones, joints, ligaments, muscles and/or nervous system.

Orthopedic Physiotherapy Evaluations and Treatments

Depending on the cause of pain or injury, your physiotherapist will look for some and/or all of the following:

What does a physiotherapist look for?

Before doing a physical exam we will take a medical history because we want to know:
  • How bad is the pain? We will ask you to rate your pain on a scale from 0-10
  • How often do you feel the pain? Is it only when you do certain activities or is it all the time? This can helps us to determine the cause and the impact it may be having on you
  • What causes the pain to increase? – We want to establish which movements, postures and/or activities we should avoid
  • What causes the pain to decrease? – We want to establish which movements, postures and/or activities we should encourage
  • How does it affect your day to day life and activities? This helps us to set therapeutic goal

Physical Exam

After taking a thorough medical history we will do a physical exam. If your pain is related to an injury we want to determine the extent to which the area is injured. If there is no injury we need to determine which structures may be at fault causing you pain.

Through a series of tests we examine the affected area for any changes in:

  • Mobility of the joint
  • Stability of the joint
  • Strength of the muscles surrounding the joint and in nearby joints
  • Flexibility of the muscles
  • Swelling in the area

How do we treat it?

Once we identify the cause and severity of your pain we will establish our therapeutic plan for you. This could include

Manual Therapy

  • This means hands on therapy. We may move your joints for you to help improve mobility or use massage to reduce tension and/or swelling

Exercise prescription

  • We will give you exercises that you can do on your own. In some cases you may needs some equipment which we will provide for you

Guided exercises

  • Some clients need us to show them how to do certain exercise and help them with verbal or physical cueing.

Education about your condition and/or activities
