Fractures

Need physiotherapy but can’t get to a clinic? We bring the clinic to you.

Fractures (Broken Bone)

Fractures are most commonly caused by accidents (i.e falling on your hip or outstretched wrist). In some cases where the person’s bone density is very low you can have a compression fracture without an accident.
Most fractures are treated by immobilizing the bone in a cast for 4-6 weeks. This allows the bone to heal.

What to expect when you remove your cast

After your doctor sees that your fracture has healed they will remove your cast and will likely refer you to see a physiotherapist.

In the first few days after removing your cast you can expect some, all or none of the following:

  • Pain
  • Stiffness
  • Swelling
  • Weakness
  • Dry skin

What does a physiotherapist look for?

Immediately after removing a cast we expect there to be limited joint mobility and a loss of strength of the muscles surrounding the fracture site. We need to do a physical exam.
